Have you ever been looking for free website templates? If you have a blog, all chances are you did. Did you know that the dummy text Lorem Ipsum is not only a random association of Latin words, but it has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2000 years old? Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked up one of the more obscure Latin words, consectetur, from a Lorem Ipsum passage, and going through the cites of the word in classical literature, discovered the undoubtable source: Lorem ipsum was part of a passage from Cicero, specifically De finibus bonorum et malorum, a treatise on the theory of ethics written in 45 BC. The original reads, Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit . . . (“There is no one who loves pain itself, who seeks after it and wants to have it, simply because it is pain . . .”).
It is unbelievable how this Lorem Ipsum has remained the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s ; it has survived not only four centuries of letter-by-letter resetting but even the leap into electronic typesetting, essentially unchanged. That is what can be called a time-proof content! Who can compete with that? I’m still amused by one of the frequent blog design mistakes some people make: use a pre-made template and forget to replace the Lorem Ipsum text.
If you design templates and you need some dummy text to fill them with, you can use this tool to generate your own Lorem Ipsum version.
Well, that’s just nifty. I had no idea where the Lorem Ipsum text came from, though I’ve been using it since way back, oh, when page layout was done with wax and galleys! Thanks so much for the enlightenment; I love learning things like that.
